The Internet of Food: Towards the creation of an interconnected data infrastructure to reduce food loss and waste and improve the efficiency of the food supply chain

Abstract

Food loss and waste is among the most pressing global issues and is commonly regarded as a significant obstacle to global sustainability. Around 1.3 billion tonnes of food are lost or wasted annually, which is equivalent to one-third of all food produced for human consumption. The international community is expected to face a major problem in providing safe food for nearly 9.1 billion people by 2050. While the emphasis is on increasing production by 50%-70%, improving the framework along the food supply chain to reduce food loss and waste can be a more efficient approach. In response to the rising consumption demands, businesses and consumers must speed up the deployment of new innovations for a more sustainable future. Numerous sensing and actuation technologies have been widely used along the supply chain; however, most of the existing data are private. Confidential data sharing between consumers, businesses, and governments is crucial for all parties to reach better decisions making and track the improvement. This can be achieved via the establishment of interconnected data infrastructures and a better utilization of the existing sensing and prediction technologies. In this talk, I will present an IoT device that can increase the shelf-life of fresh foods, help households manage the food inventory, and track their food consumption and wastage behaviors. I will also address how consumers can contribute to the Internet of Food, food security and environmental sustainability.

Next Generation Smart Apparel “e-skin” Based on Novel Stretchable Electronics

Abstract

Xenoma’s e-skin is the next generation smart apparel that is comfortable, mechanically robust, well-insulated and machine washable IoT clothing. In order to place many sensors on fabric, we have developed printed circuit fabric (PCF) based on a novel stretchable electric circuit. PCF enables us to freely design a smart apparel. PCF is an evolutionary version of a flexible printed circuit and can be used for making smart apparel. We have a diverse range of e-skins. e-skin MEVA is a smart motion capture suit, which 18 of 6-axis inertial motion unit (IMU) sensors are located on whole-body skeletal segments to measure and calculate posture and position of each segment. Users do not have to worry about where to put sensors on their body since the suit can automatically determine the sensors’ position on the body. e-skin MEVA is the easiest and quickest motion capture system in the world. e-skin EMStyle is an electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) full-body suit for training and rehabilitation. A trainer in a gym can connect with a trainee at home to control the trainee’s stimulation levels remotely online. It’s the only system in the world that can do this. e-skin ECG is a Holter electrocardiograph systems realizing the world 1st long-term 3-lead ECG by mail. Patients can do ECG tests by themselves with just wearing e-skin ECG shirt which places ECG electrodes in the correct positions on the patient body.

Advanced Technologies for Large FOV Waveguide and Visual SLAM

Abstract

Cellid is developing the waveguide and projector for AR glasses and high performance spatial recognition software for empowering various devices such as smart phone, tablet and smart glasses, to give cutting edge UI/UX to the users. We have developed the best-in-class full-color waveguide and micro projector for AR glasses. Our latest product achieved 60 degree FOV and 450 Nits/Lm simultaneously. As you may know, it is quite challenging to achieve wider FOV and high brightness at competitive level as there is trade-off among them though, we successfully achieved it. We are developing products applying Visual SLAM and SfM, the technology that supports the Metaverse. In the SfM field, we are developing a SaaS product that provides various functions such as “bird’s eye view”, “pedestrian’s eye view” and “measurement” in 3D cyberspace. In addition, our monocular visual SLAM estimates the position of AR glasses in real time and simultaneously creates a spatial map. The features are that the processing speed and accuracy are high, and the data can be shared with people in the same space.

Speaker

 Satoshi Shiraga

A Novel Wearable Biofeedback Device for Real-Time Stress Management

Abstract

Stress costs the US $300 billion each year and significantly contributes to mortality worldwide. Innovations that offer personalized and cost-efficient stress management are essential for improving global health and wellness. E-Sentience is building a wearable technology platform to help people better understand and moderate their physiological and psychological health by measuring key chemical biomarkers in real time. The company began in 2021 with the goal to build the first commercially available wearable device that directly measures stress levels via cortisol (“the stress hormone”) in real time. The device will also measure non-hormonal stress markers (heart rate, blood oxygenation, skin conductance and skin temperature) and includes a cooling component that activates when acute stress metrics exceed personalized baseline zones. Sudden exposure to cold temperatures has been demonstrated to relieve anxiety, lower heart rate and interrupt panic attacks. By automating this response, individuals would no longer need to seek active intervention in the middle of a crisis. The technology fills a gap in the wearables marketplace. In a world where one can track calories burned, steps taken, and body temperature, one should also be able to track stress levels directly in real time. E-Sentience provides an innovative solution to stress detection and management for a wide variety of consumers who desire to improve their health and wellness, including athletes, field workers, and patients with chronic diseases through real-time data analysis of in our mobile app.
