Description
Proliferation of data sources associated to Internet of Things (IoT) deployment as well as those bound to Open Data Portals (e.g. European Data Portal, Municipalities Open Data Portals, etc.) and Social Media platforms is creating an abundance of information that is called to bring benefits for both the private and public sectors, through the development of added-value services, increasing administrations’ transparency and availability or fostering efficiency of public services. However, pieces of information without a context are significantly less valuable.
The concept of providing context to the data by semantically modelling and annotating the available datasets and data streams is being explored and enables further processing of the data as different data objects can be linked together to create a more profound and complex understanding of the context, the so-called situational awareness, in which a situation can be described as the combination of different entities that are interrelated (e.g. in time, in space, in concern, etc.). All in all, by applying these techniques to raw and heterogeneous data, it is possible not only to improve data’s usability but also to provide enriched data to end-user applications.
This Special Session aims to present high-quality research and recent technology advances towards the development of semantically enriched data for favouring interoperable scenarios and the provision of added-value services. Relevant topics include all aspects of semantics and semantic web applied to data management systems in any application domain; architectures and protocols based on semantic modelling of heterogeneous data; use of semantics for the implementation of Data Spaces; security and data quality schemes enabled through semantics; AI-based techniques for data enrichment; applications and services utilizing an enriched understanding of situations described in a semantic manner by multi-tenant sources.
The Special Session will look for a combination of research-driven and industry-driven works so that a fruitful discussion can be established in order to overcome the current shortcomings for the actual realization of the Economy of Data paradigm, as well as to better identify already existing challenges and future research path.
Contributors will be invited to submit original papers that present significant advances of the state of the art regarding APPLICATION AND MANAGEMENT OF SEMANTICALLY ENRICHED DATA, including but not limited to the following topics:
- Heterogeneous data discovery
- Data semantic modelling
- Data semantic annotation
- Data quality assessment and management
- AI-based data linking
- AI-based data enrichment
- Continuum Computing architecture for enriched data provision
- Applications of semantically enriched data for: Digital Twins, Smart Cities, Smart Mobility, Industry 4.0, Smart Agriculture

Chairs
Dr. Luis Sánchez, Universidad de Cantabria, Santander, España
Dr. Luis Sanchez is Associate Professor of Telecommunications Engineering at University of Cantabria (Spain). He holds a Ph.D. degree in Telecommunications from the University of Cantabria (2009). Currently, his research is focused on the aspects of machine learning and network technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its application to Smart Cities and Industry 4.0. He also works on the integration of these networks in the Semantic Web for the provision of interoperable services through the “Web of Things”. His research activity has been developed mainly in the framework of international cooperative projects from the 5th, 6th and 7th Framework Program and Horizon 2020 of the European Commission. In this sense, he has collaborated in more than a dozen of projects in the last 5 years where he has acted as Technical Coordinator for some of them. As a result of this work, he has (co-) authored more than 60 scientific articles in journals and international congresses of recognized prestige as well as participated as guest speaker at major conferences in the area. Moreover, he frequently peer-reviews articles for journals included in the first quartiles of the JCR and for international conferences and workshops taking part also in the organizing and program committees of the latter. Finally, he is also regularly invited to participate as external expert reviewer for the European (EC), Spanish (AEI), French (ANR) and Italian (MIUR) Research Agencies evaluating research projects for competitive Calls.
