MEIDENSHA Corporation manufactures power generating facilities that makes or generates electricity since 1897. The products ranges widely from turbine power generators, photovoltaic power generation and hydroelectric generating facilities that use renewable energy sources, to emergency power generating facilities that play an important role in case of a disaster. The conventional facilities are only have to satisfy the power generation function. However the products,   in   a   few   years,   will   have   connecting   to   IoT   and   ICT.   Since   the generating facilities are replaced usually per 30 years, these digitalization are not easy to do. By using the IoT technology, these facilities will realize that its experience and knowhow developed at customers’ actual worksites to create efficient and optimal social infrastructure. I, Dr. Toda, am an engineer in the fields of electricity, electricity and information technology. The main research areas were Data Science which is Signal Processing and Machine Learning in academic fields. After that, he joined Meidensha Co. in 2016, and has been working on digitization of generators and equipment using IoT, ICT, and Data Science. In this talk, I will introduce that carriers is changed a researcher on the data science to an engineer for IoT in the power generating facilities.

 

Chap2. Kenji Tei, associate professor at Faculty of Science and Engineering in Waseda University

 

Software systems are increasingly embedded deep into the real world. Although IoT is now widely known and used, such software systems that closely interact with the physical world have been called ubiquitous/pervasive systems or ambient intelligence in the past, and have been studied steadily for several decades. In this talk, I will talk about my experience as a researcher in IoT-related research field for this twenty years. In particular, I will introduce my research experiences related to the IoT systems, such as ubiquitous/pervasive computing, mobile ad-hoc network, wireless sensor networks, ambient intelligence, and smart cities. IoT is an inherently multi-disciplinary area, and thus collaboration with researchers and practitioners would stimulate research activities. I will also introduce IoT-related research projects, in particular, EU-JP joint research and development projects of smart city platform in which I was involved for this ten years and my experience in those projects. Finally, I will remark on lessons learned from the viewpoint of career growth in academia.
